Green Party Policy – a cheat sheet

Written by Kylie Barton

This is a synopsis of some of the lesser known policies as they appear on the Green Party website. Some parts are pasted, some are summarised.

General philosophy
The Green Party is a party of social and environmental justice, which supports a radical transformation of society for the benefit of all, and for the planet as a whole. Humankind depends on the diversity of the natural world for its existence.

The Earth’s physical resources are finiteEvery person, in this and future generations, should be entitled to basic material security as of right. Our actions should take account of the well-being of other nations, other species, and future generations.

We should not pursue our well-being to the detriment of theirs. A healthy society is based on voluntary co-operation between empowered individuals in a democratic society, free from discrimination whether based on race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, religion, social origin or any other prejudice.

We emphasise democratic participation and look for non-violent solutions to conflict.

The success of a society cannot be measured by narrow economic indicators, but should take account of factors affecting the quality of life for all people: personal freedom, social equity, health, happiness and human fulfilment.

Crime and Justice
We seek to look into why crime is committed, and tackle those issues to prevent crime. We look at restorative rather than punitive measures.

Migration
The Green Party believe that we are one race – the human race. No one Nation has the right to keep its use migration controls to protect their privileges. Migration policies should not discriminate directly on grounds of race, colour, religion, political belief, disability, sex or sexual orientation. Preference should not be given to those with resources or desirable skills, but instead should be based on ecological viability and effect.

Population
To achieve a sustainable level of consumption through education, and family planning for a sustainable birth rate to be reached.

Culture Media & Sport
Wide participation, fair access, and fair management and ownership with zero censorship.

Health
All services and treatments free at the point of need in a national health service.

Marginalised and minority groups
The Green Party fights for a truly inclusive, understanding, tolerant, and appreciative society. It does not discriminate.

Defence
Peace building through peaceful methods of reconciliation and minimum intervention. The Territorial Army will become military and civilian to allow those outside the military to more easily donate time to disasters abroad.

Drugs
Legalisation of cannabis, higher taxation on legal drugs such as tobacco, and the establishment of test services for individuals to test drugs anonymously. More of a health and education approach as opposed to the criminal approach used at present.

Education
Academic learning introduced later at the age of 6, and free and subsidised places for early years. Learning a language from age 7. School starting and leaving age will be reviewed. Youth schools which will be free accessible youth groups with educational benefits in learning life skills and options for vocational and practical training from the age of 14. Changing the curriculum to be more life relevant, PSHE focussed, and built to develop children’s emotional capacity. Pupil centred learning with current assessments scrapped to better reflect holistic development.

Economy
The Green Party would replace the conventional indicators of a healthy economy with those that measure progress towards sustainability, equity and devolution. It believes in Positive Money.

EU
To remain within the EU with the aim of making the EU more sustainability focussed.

Housing
To ensure that housing is proportionate to the needs of the family, and that housing promotes community living whilst minimising environmental impact. To address the housing crisis by building 500,000 new homes for social rent and building them on brown fields.

Welfare
To introduce the Citizens income to make sure every citizen’s basic needs are being met no matter what their circumstance. Community initiatives to provide support to families (such as family centres) will be established. The green party will construct a welfare system that works to better society as a whole and create a more equal playing field.
